Of Course Demanding But Atypical!
August 6, 2014
A driver from Ethiopian Red Cross Society, Benishangul Gumuz Branch named Ato Belete Fikire has been working for seven months in the population movement project of Ethiopian Red Cross Society in Benishangul Gumuz region. Specifically putting, his work station is in a town called Tongo found in Mao komo Woreda. Belete is usually known for being diligent at his work and his recent exemplary deed is an addition for his wonderful endeavors at his assignments. Some of us may become surprised of his bravery but what is it all about-what is up there?
The first question one may raise after reading the story would most probably be: who told him to? May be, because he is a disciplined humanitarian staff or is it just his behavior? Some may even call it practical religious man! Whatever the case, he has done something wonderful so that, shall we all stand and give a round of applause? Anyways, one day on February 02, 2013, Belete was driving a Red Cross ambulance from Assosa to Bambasi as his usual duty.
However, this day seemed to come up with something unexpected. On his way forward to his destination, he eventually observed a standard travel bag sized package falling from a mini-bus transporting people at Amba, 14 kebele 10 km far from the regional town, Assosa. However, the driver and people in the mini-bus continued their journey without noticing what has already happened to the min-bus. When Belete reached the place where he saw something fallen out of the minibus, he has got the package opened and noticed a small size bag in, which is also opened due to the impact. He stopped in here not, but, he observed something valuable inside; jewelries and cloths inside the opened bag. While he was collecting all the items fallen out of the minibus, people from the surrounding came, wrap around gazing at him and even some of them claimed the bag. Since he had observed the package falling out from the passing-by mini-bus, he did not directly surrender to give them a chance; he picked up the bag and brought it to the surrounding police station and handed-over the items to the police.
The Assosa police station later on, after investigating the issue, identified the owner of the items and subsequently transferred the belongings to the owner. During the handing-over, it was also learned that, the jewelries found inside the bag were worth of 16gm of gold and 15gm of silver. Beletes action is an action of a responsible and honest citizen and at the time acclaimed by the police station. Moreover, Police office of the Assosa city administration has appreciated his deed and issued a letter of recognition for his honesty and heroic accomplishment.
Noticing his humble act as exemplary to many, the Benishangul Gumuz communication Bureau had also prepared news and transmitted it on the regional program on the National TV station. Honesty pays back!
