Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Resilience

Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Resilience

In today’s risk-prone and interconnected world, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and community resilience are not just strategic options, they are imperatives for sustainable development and effective humanitarian response. For the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), this priority represents a shift from reactive assistance to proactive risk mitigation, capacity building, and inclusive development.

Through this priority, ERCS aims to empower communities to anticipate, withstand, adapt to, and recover from shocks and stresses including those caused by natural hazards, climate change, displacement, social tensions, and economic instability. The overarching goal is to safeguard lives and livelihoods, promote peaceful coexistence, and build long-term resilience through targeted, locally led, and scalable interventions.

To realize this ambition, ERCS has defined six strategic objectives, each accompanied by key strategic interventions designed to translate vision into tangible impact.

Strategic Objectives

1. Mitigate climate change Impacts and reduce socio-economic risks
2. Enhance livelihoods and economic opportunities for vulnerable communities including youths
3. Promote peace and advance a culture of non-violence
4. Strengthen migration services and Restoring Family Links (RFL)
