Ethiopian Red Cross Society signs MoU with pharmaceuticals fund and supply agency

May 2, 2018

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) and Federal Pharmaceuticals Fund and Supply Agency (PFSA) signs Memorandum of Understanding with to provide the community with medicines of lower price collaboratively on April 30, 2018. While signing the agreement, Frehiwot Work, Secretary General of ERCS, said that the Society has more than 40 pharmacies all over the country being run with excess of 100 million birr. The Pharmacies are serving the community, not as profit maker, but service providers of essential drugs with fair price. While delivering the service, the Society purchases the drugs with the support of the community and the donors and the Society has usually been experiencing challenges of financial shortage. “Now the agreement with the Agency will enable us to get drugs on loan bases and serve the community in a better way,” she added.

Goitom Gigar, Pharmaceuticals Purchase Deputy General Director of PFSA, on his part, stated that the Agency has been providing drugs to Kenema Pharmacies so far. And, the partnership with ERCS creates an opportunity for the Agency to further reach the community through its pharmacies with minimum rate. “So, we strongly believe that this partnership agreement will have greater value in increasing accessibility of drugs to the community with affordable price,” he put forth.

It is also underlined that the partnership agreement would have an advantage of avoiding unnecessary gatherings of service recipients to only certain areas.
