The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), conducted a two-day staff orientation workshop on the Multi-Sectoral Emergency Response Operation in Akobo Woreda from 30 June 2026 in Gambella Town.
The workshop brought together ERCS senior management and technical staff from Headquarters and the Gambella Regional Branch, volunteers, newly recruited project personnel, and representatives from the Regional Water, Health, Disaster Risk Management, and Women and Social Affairs bureaus.
It aimed to strengthen operational readiness, enhance coordination, and improve project staff performance while fostering a unified team committed to delivering effective humanitarian assistance.

In his welcoming remarks, the Head of the Gambella Regional Branch, Ato Bel Keat, stated that the workshop provides an opportunity to review assessment findings, reflect on the project’s achievements and implementation challenges, and build consensus on future priorities and the way forward.

Addressing the participants, Mr. Peter Aman, Chairperson of the Branch Board, emphasized the importance of delivering timely, dignified, and impartial humanitarian assistance to refugees and host communities affected by displacement and other humanitarian crises. He commended the project team for their dedication and lifesaving efforts in supporting vulnerable populations in the region.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Dires Desyibelew, Deputy Secretary General for Programs of ERCS, highlighted that the orientation reflects the Society’s commitment to making effective use of support from international partners to deliver timely and impactful humanitarian assistance. He stressed that the success of the operation depends on strong coordination, close collaboration, and a transparent implementation approach involving all stakeholders.

Participants also reviewed the project’s overall progress, achievements, challenges, and priorities for the next phase, followed by discussions on strengthening coordination and improving emergency response mechanisms.
