ERCS–Swedish Red Cross Migration Project Launched in Jimma

ERCS–Swedish Red Cross Migration Project Launched in Jimma
August 20, 2026NewsRödaKorset

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), in collaboration with the Swedish Red Cross (SRC), officially launched the ERCS–Swedish Red Cross Migration Project in Jimma Town, Oromia Region.

The launch event brought together representatives from relevant government offices, non-governmental organizations, ERCS staff, and other key stakeholders working on migration and related humanitarian issues. The event provided an important platform to strengthen coordination, enhance understanding of migration-related challenges, and reaffirm the commitment of partners to supporting migrants, returnees, and host communities.

The project aims to contribute to improved dignity and protection for migrants along migratory routes and upon return, while also improving the living conditions of returnees and host communities.
Through the project, ERCS and SRC will work with relevant stakeholders and communities to strengthen access to protection and essential support services for migrants and returnees. The project will also promote opportunities that contribute to improved livelihoods and resilience among returnees and host communities.

Speaking during the launch, Wro. Aisha, Jimma Zonal Branch Head, and Wro. Talile Haji, Oromia Regional Representative, emphasized the importance of a coordinated and people-centered approach to migration. They highlighted that migrants and returnees may face multiple vulnerabilities throughout their migration journeys and upon return, requiring strong collaboration among government institutions, humanitarian organizations, communities, and the Red Cross Movement.

The launch also served as an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and coordination among stakeholders in Jimma and to establish a shared understanding of the project’s priorities, implementation approach, and expected contributions.

The ERCS–SRC partnership reflects the shared commitment of the two National Societies to upholding human dignity, protection, and humanitarian principles, while supporting migrants, returnees, and host communities along migration routes and in areas of return.
