ERCS and ICRC Conduct Workshop on Humanitarian Reporting for Media Personnel
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), today conducted a workshop on humanitarian reporting and humanitarian activities for media personnel in Addis Ababa.
The workshop brought together media professionals to strengthen their understanding of humanitarian principles, the mandate and work of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and responsible reporting in conflict and other humanitarian contexts.
The training is part of the ongoing collaboration between ERCS and ICRC to strengthen understanding of humanitarian action and promote responsible engagement with communities and other stakeholders affected by conflict and humanitarian crises.
Key topics covered during the first day included the mandate and activities of the ICRC, protection of journalists during armed conflict, humanitarian activities of ERCS, and the basics of International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Participants also took part in plenary discussions based on practical cases and experiences, providing an opportunity to examine some of the challenges that journalists and humanitarian actors encounter when reporting on conflict and other sensitive humanitarian situations.
The discussions highlighted the importance of accurate, balanced and responsible reporting, particularly when covering people affected by armed conflict, disasters and other humanitarian emergencies. Participants exchanged experiences and discussed how media reporting can contribute to public understanding of humanitarian needs while respecting the dignity, safety and privacy of affected people.
The workshop also provided a platform for media professionals to engage with ERCS and ICRC representatives, raise questions, share experiences and strengthen their understanding of the respective roles of humanitarian organizations and the media in humanitarian contexts.
Through this collaboration, ERCS and ICRC continue to support knowledge-sharing and capacity strengthening among relevant stakeholders, contributing to a better understanding of humanitarian principles and the protection of people affected by conflict and other crises.
The workshop will continue tomorrow with further discussions and learning sessions on humanitarian reporting and related topics.
