ICRC President, Peter Maurer Lauds Humanitarian Activities Of ERCS

Mr. Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), praised the humanitarian activities of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS).
Mr. Maurer made this remark on October 29, 2014 while he was visiting the ERCS and discussing with Board and management members of the ERCS regarding the joint humanitarian interventions in the country.
We re extremely happy about this partnership; Ethiopia certainly belongs to the top quality national Societies, Mr. Maurer indicated comparing ERCS with other 30 African National Societies where ICRC delegation is present.
The bilateral relations in cooperation between the two humanitarian organizations have been outstanding particularly, in the areas of capacity building and logistics.
Dr. Ahmed Reja, President of the ERCS in his welcoming remark, explained about the humanitarian and developmental activities of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) to the delegation and called upon the ICRC to extend its support to build the Societys capacity. We are looking forward for further strategic partnership between the ERCS and the ICRC that can make a difference both on humanitarian and developmental interventions, he said.
The ICRC and the ERCS have also been supporting South Sudanese refugees at various entry points in refugee camps in the regional state of Gambella. So far, five communal shelters and over 200 latrines have been constructed for the refugees.
We have been working closely together, considerably our operation here in Ethiopia and particularly in Gambella region in the objective to help the refugee influx from South Sudan and here again to support the ERCS which has excellent work all over the country in food security and water and sanitation which are the basic elements of humanitarian assistance, Mr. Maurer noted.
It was also indicated that, the ICRC in collaboration with the ERCS has been engaged in various humanitarian activities aimed mainly at promoting and strengthening Universal Humanitarian Principles in Ethiopia since 1970s.
During his visit to Ethiopia, the ICRC president conferred with President Dr. Mulatu Teshome on ways of enhancing humanitarian activities in Ethiopia, it was learned.
