ERCS Signs Agreements With Non-movement Partners
December 23, 2015
Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) signed agreement with International Organization for Migration on distribution of life-saving emergency assistance to disaster affected individuals in Ethiopia.
The overall objective of the agreement is to save lives of displaced and disaster affected people in Ethiopia through the provision of life saving emergency assistance. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Report (IDMR) and joint assessments with the Government of Ethiopia counterpart Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Sector (DRMFSS) indicates that as of June 2014, about 375,645 individuals were displaced within Ethiopia as a result of conflict.
Out of 323,390 protracted internally displaced people (IDP), about 264,734 individuals (82%) are living in Somali Region with no proper shelter and livelihood exposed to harsh weather including 17,316 additional newly displaced most vulnerable IDPs being targeted by this intervention; while 52,255 have returned to areas of origin. Moreover, the displaced persons depend highly on host communities to cope with the harsh living conditions. The provision of life saving assistance will alleviate human suffering during the displacement of the affected communities and will provide much needed support to families without shelter and basic non-food-item (NFI) kits.
It includes plastic sheeting, and robe to provide physical protection, blankets and sleeping mats for thermal comfort, jerry cans for water storage, kitchen sets for hygienic food preparation and consumption; mosquito nets to protect against vector borne diseases identified as a humanitarian need by an inter-agency standing committee. Since most of the displaced families are staying with host families, the NFI kits given to the IDPs will help reduce pressure on host family resources currently over stretched as a result of limited resources within the host community households.
The provision of shelter and non-food items will additionally support returning IDPs to their places of origin, when peace initiatives succeed, and to rebuild their shelter and household assets as the majority have lost everything during the conflict. The project agreement which is worth USD 15,000 is expected to phase out by March 31st 2015. In related development, ERCS also signed programme cooperation agreement with United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) to implement child protection project in Gambela region.
The agreement is worth a total budget of USD 161,601 out of which USD 99,063 contributed by UNICEF in terms of money, USD 54,300 contributed by UNICEF in kind support and the remaining USD 8,238 contributed by ERCS in terms of various services given by ERCS Headquarter and the Gambela regional branch. The Program Cooperation Agreement is expected to be fully completed by August 31, 2015.
