ERCS Provides Supplementary Food For Drought Victims In Somali Region.

Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) with the money supported byDavid and Lucile Packard foundation provided supplementary food for 7,641 drought affected children under 5, lactating and pregnant mothers in Somali region Fafan zone, kebribeyah and Harshine districts from December 19 to 30,2016.
Yemeserach Belayneh, David and Lucile Packard foundation Ethiopian Country Director said, we donate through the ERCS because of the society past successful accomplishment of relief aid, accessibility and effectiveness of the society enables to reach the vulnerable timely and efficiently. Thus we reach to the people through ERCSas the society provides emergency relief aid to the needy andfollows sustainable development activities in the project area.
Ayan Mohammed 25, a mother of three from Risle kebele was leading her family by producing crops and breeding animals. According to Ayan, the drought occurred in the region howeverseriously affected her crop production and killed hersheep and goats. As a result, her family faced food shortage.
After distributing the supplementary food items, Abdrisa Hasile Yusuf Risle kebele Chairperson said there is no rain in the region for the past five months and as a result the community did not produce crop. Hence, children and mothers became malnourished and displaced from their village.
Halima Abdulahi, Risle health post extension worker said, children and mothers faced malnutrition, because they do not have milk and mothers are not able to breast feed their baby. Ayala, Farda kebele health center medical director, on his part said the in the health center we admitted malnourished children andprovided them with medical care and supplementary food.
David and Lucile Packard foundation donated 200,000 USD to Ethiopian Red Cross Society for the support of malnourished children under five, lactating and pregnant mothers in Somali region, Harshim and Kebrebeyih woredas.
ERCS has been providing supplementary food to malnourished children and mothers in the region. The beneficiaries would like the society to extend its intervention in developmental activities like water hole drilling and agriculture modernization activities in the future.
