The training aims at strengthening the knowledge and skills of ERCS staff and volunteers on how to handling emergency cases, provision of ambulance services, and camp and relief management during disaster response and post disaster operations.
The theoretical explanation was supported by practical exposure to Mizan, Asella and Shire Endeabagune selected as disaster prone areas so that trainees should develop their practical skills in providing humanitarian assistance at the time of emergency.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement national disaster response team (NDRT) and regional disaster response team (RDRT) are standardized emergency response means through which the National Societies strengthen their capacity to prepare for and provide effective and timely humanitarian assistance in times of emergencies.
NDRT team was established following the provision of eight days comprehensive training for ERCS staff and volunteers from Regional Branches which was held from June 6 – 13, 2016 in Oromia Region state, Wolliso town.
Following, Branch Disaster Response Teams /BDRT / were established in Oromiya, Tigray, Southern Nations Nationalities and People Region and Afar regional branch offices having similar mission with the NDRT and to intervene its activities focused on prioritized areas where there are frequent emergencies, in August 2016.
The ICRC ,International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies /IFRC/ and Canadian Red Cross are collaborators of the training and jointly supporting ERCS Disaster Preparedness and Response department.
The society has planned to establish BDRTs in the rest of the regional branch offices in 2017.
