ERCS celebrates International Women’s Day for the first time

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) celebrates International Women’s Day for the first time at its Center of Capacity Building for Humanitarian Services on March 8, 2018.
Ferehiwot Worku, Ercs Secretary General, stated on the occasion the Society has been working on making women’s participation meaningfully through proportionating the composition of men and women at all levels. Recently, the Society has been able to get one of its women Board member elected as a member of Governing Board of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
“Events like International Women’s Day are able to create a space for dialogue on women’s issues and thereby widen gender related understandings. It plays a significant role in inspiring women and motivating the men to do what is expected of him/her towards empower women”, she underlined. Making working environments conducive and attractive for women is very important while award of positions should base on merit; and women also need to avail themselves in an exceling manner, she further put forward.
Mekdelawit Kirubel, HR Head at ERCS, stated on her part that every woman has her own potential that is waiting for time and place to be realized. International Women’s Day is the time that enables women to express themselves and build common understanding among all actors, according to her. “Old sayings having negative impact on women no more express who we are”, she added.
Theatrical performance, poems presentation, coffee ceremony and other shows were those accompanied the event.
