Impressive Work Seen to Adapt to Climate Change in Wolayta Zone, South Ethiopian Region

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), in collaboration with the Netherlands Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has implemented a nature-based integrated soil and water conservation projects in Wolayta Zone, Damot Woyde and Damote Gale Weredas of the Southern Ethiopian Region, benefiting the local community.

Mr. Dessalegn Demise, the project coordinator of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society’s Wolayta Zone Branch Office, stated that they have been working on soil and water conservation in the zone, as well as distributing free seedlings of Papaya, Mango, and Coffee to the community over the past six years.

The projects, ‘Resilient, Improved and Strengthen Community (RISE)’ – with a financial support of 64.8 million Birr from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and ‘Strengthening Resilience through Eco-System Based Adaptation and Management (STREAM)’ – with a financial support of 35 million Birr from the Netherlands Red Cross are being implemented.

Mr. Takele Ferenje, the Chief Administrator of Shakisho Sone Kebele in Damot Gale Woreda, Wolaita Zone, extended his gratitude to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society for visiting the area, conducting a survey, and working with the administration to engage the public in restoring the degraded land in the area.

According to Mr. Alebachew Getie, the Disaster Risk Reduction Project Coordinator at the ERCS, the two projects, which aim to reduce disaster risk and adapt to climate change through the implementation of a Nature-Based Solution, have been implemented by the Ethiopian Red Cross Society since December 2025 and are showing promising results.

ERCS, in collaboration with the Netherlands Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, is implementing projects in Damote Woyed and Damote Gali Weredas, benefiting more than 50,000 people.

በወላይታ ዞን የአየር ንብረት ለውጥን መላመድ ያስቻለ አመርቂ የአፈር እና ውሃ ስራ ተሰራ

የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ከኔዘርላንድስ ቀይ መስቀል እና የዓለም አቀፍ ቀይ መስቀልና ቀይ ጨረቃ ማኅበራት ፌዴሬሽን ጋር በመተባበር በደቡብ ኢትዮጵያ ክልል ወላይታ ዞን ዳሞት ወይዴና ዳሞት ጋሌ ወረዳዎች እየተተገበረ ያለው ተፈጥሮን መሰረት ያደረገ የተቀናጀ የአፈር እና ውሃ ጥበቃ ስራ ማህበረሰቡን ተጠቃሚ እያደረገ መሆኑ ተገለፀ፡፡

ላለፉት 6 ዓመታት የችግኝ ጣቢዎችን በማቋቋም በዞኑ የአፈር እና የውኃ ጥበቃ ስራዎች ሲሰሩ ከመቆየታቸውም ባለፈ ህብረተሰቡን ተጠቃሚ የሚያደርጉ እንደ ፓፓዬ፣ ማንጎ እና የቡና ችግኞችን በነጻ ለማኅበረሰቡ ማከፋፈል መቻሉን አቶ ደሳለኝ ደምሴ በኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር የወላይታ ዞን ቅርንጫፍ ጽ/ቤት ፕሮጀክት አስተባባሪ ተናግረዋል፡፡

ከዓለም አቀፍ ቀይ መስቀልና ቀይ ጨረቃ ማኅበራት ፌዴሬሽን በተገኘ የ 64.8 ሚሊዮን ብር የገንዘብ ድጋፍ ‘Resilient, Improved and Strengthen Community (RISE)’ እና ከኔዘርላንድስ ቀይ መስቀል በተገኘ የ35 ሚሊየን ብር ድጋፍ ‘Strengthening Resilience through Eco-System Based Adaptation and Management (STREAM)’ የተባሉ ፕሮጀክቶች እየተተገበሩ ይገኛሉ፡፡

ተፈጥሮን መሰረት ያደረገ የተቀናጀ ስልት (Nature-Based Solution) በመተግበር የአደጋ ስጋትን ለመቀነስ እና የአየር ንብረት ለውጥ ጫናን ለመላመድ ሁለቱ ፕሮጀክቶች በኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር በኩል ከታህሳስ ወር 2017ዓ.ም ጀምሮ እየተተገበሩ እንደሚገኙና አመርቂ ውጤቶች እየተመዘገቡ መሆኑን የተናገሩት በማኅበሩ የአደጋ ስጋት ቅነሳ ፕሮጀክት አስተባባሪ የሆኑት አቶ አለባቸው ጌጤ ናቸው፡፡

የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ከኔዘርላንድስ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ጋር በጋራ በመሆን በዳሞት ወይዴ ወረዳ ማዬ ኦፈሬ ቀበሌ ከአየር ፀባይ መዛባት ጋር በተገናኘ እየተፈጠሩ ያሉ ችግሮችን ለመግታት ባካሄደው ውይይት ላይ ከተገኙ የህብረተሰብ ክፍሎች ውስጥ የቀበሌው ነዋሪ አቶ አበበ አንዳጎ ከአየር ንብረት መለዋወጥ ጋር በተያያዘ በተከሰቱ የጎርፍ አደጋዎች እና የወባ በሽታ ከፍተኛ ጉዳት መድረሱን ይናገራሉ፡፡

በወላይታ ዞን ዳሞት ጋሌ ወረዳ የሻኪሾ ሶኔ ቀበሌ ዋና አስተዳደሪ አቶ ታከለ ፈረንጄ በበኩላቸው የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ወደ አካባቢው ገብቶ ጥናት በማድረግ በአካባቢውን ተራቁቶ የነበረውን መሬት እንዲያገግም ህዝቡን በማሳተፍ ከአስተዳደሩ ጋር በመስራቱ አመስግነዋል፡፡

የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ከኔዘርላንድ ቀይ መስቀል እና የዓለም አቀፍ ቀይ መስቀልና ቀይ ጨረቃ ማህበራት ፌዴሬሽን ጋር በዳሞት ወይዴና ዳሞት ጋሌ ወረዳዎች እየተገበረ ያለው ፕረጀክቶች ከ50 ሺህ በላይ ሰዎችን ተጠቃሚ የሚያደርግ ነው፡፡
