Solar-powered water points improve the food system

Ato Yussuf Aden, an agro-pastoralist, is married with eight children. He owns 18 cattle and eightsheep, which help his family survive in the drought-prone area of Gerba Harre.Aw-bere Woreda, Fafen Zone of the Somali Region.

For Ato Yussuf and other member of the communities in the area, recurrent droughts, degraded environments, and water shortage challenge their survival. However, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, in partnership with the Netherlands Red Cross, has installed a solar system under the “Acute Crises Project” that helps the community thrive.
“The main benefit is that when the water storage was broken, we had to spend money on transport and buy water, which reduced our income. Now, with no water expenses, our household food system has improved,” said Ato Yusuf.

This durable solution indicates that how funding on resilience need to be an investment of securing food availability throughout Ethiopia.
