ERCS’s Resilience Building Project Changes Communities’ Lives in Tigray Region

Mrs. Amina Mohammed, a mother of two sons and three daughters, lives in Araguara kebele, Dergajen tabia, Enderta woreda, in the South Eastern Zone of Tigray region. A decade ago, she was one of the poorest women in Deragen Tabia.

With support from ERCS, together with IFRC and other sister national societies, Mrs. Amina received financial support of 140 Euros in 2009, which enabled her to engage in cattle fattening business. She now has a shop and two oxen, earning over ETB 80,000 annually, which enables her to feed her family properly.

“Before starting cattle fattening work, our lives were challenging. I couldn’t feed my children, and they were forced to drop out of school. After starting the cattle fattening work, we have been able to feed ourselves four times a day, including snacks—in the morning, at noon, in the afternoon, and at night. Now, my eldest son has graduated from the university,” Mrs. Amina said, extending her gratitude to ERCS.

Mrs. Zenebu Wekele

Under an Integrated Food Security Development (Resilience Building) project, the livelihoods of 2,259 vulnerable households in Enderta woreda, South Eastern Zone of Tigray region, have

sustainably improved through targeted interventions and support.

Mrs. Zenebu Wekele, a mother of seven children, resides in the same area of theTigray region. A decade ago, she was among the poorest women in Deragen Tabia. ERCS provided her with ETB 12,500 in financial support, enabling her to buy a milk cow. She now properly feeds her family.

ERCS calls on partners, government, and private sector leaders to commit funding to sustainable, community-led projects and to act to help communities transition from dependence on food aid to resilience and self-sufficiency.
