Thousands of Communities Get Access to Clean Water in the West Arsi Zone of the Oromia Region

Mrs Burkitu Haji, a 60-year-old elder, is the mother of seven sons and one daughter and resides in Fifota Wosharbi Kebele, Dodola Woreda, West Arsi Zone, of the Oromia region. Years ago, Mrs Burkitu faced hardships in accessing clean water.

ERCS, funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), has built water distribution points in Fifota Wosharbi Kebele and solar-powered water points in Eddo Bediya Kebele, both in Dodola Woreda, under its “Ethiopia Conflict to Resilience (EC2R)” project.

Mrs. Burkitu and more than 9,500 households now have access to potable water a few meters away from their homes in the area. “Before the water project, our children and we suffered from amoeba. Now, with the new water distribution points, we have clean water for cooking, baking ‘Enjera’ and making bread,” says Mrs Burkitu.

ERCS calls on government, business leaders, and development agencies to support addressing the water problems throughout Ethiopia, focusing on ensuring safe, accessible water and sanitation (WASH) and thus achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.
