ERCS Officially Launches Soil and Water Conservation Activities in Southern Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society, in partnership with the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies(IFRC) and in collaboration with the Damot Gale Woreda administration, officially launched the Bega season soil and water conservation activities under the STREAM and RISE Projects in Shaksho Shone Kebele.

The projects aim to address the impacts of climate change through green development, sustainable land management, natural resource development and protection, and the improvement of household livelihoods.

Mr. Amanuel Ayza, Head of the Wolaita Zone Red Cross Branch Office, emphasized that for agricultural interventions to be effective and yield the intended results, the support provided by the government and partner organizations must bear fruit through professional commitment and competence, strong stakeholder collaboration, and improved awareness among farmers. He called on all parties to discharge their responsibilities with due attention.

Mr. Desalegn Demse, STREAM Project Coordinator, stated in his remarks that properly implemented soil and water conservation practices can improve soil fertility and thereby increase production and productivity.

Mr. Alebachew Getie, Projects Coordinator at ERCS HQ, explained that the natural resource conservation and community mobilization activities in Shaksho Shone Kebele are designed to establish a nature-based food security system. He added that the main objective of the project is to rehabilitate degraded land and benefit 85 community members through improved livelihoods.
