ERCS Leadership Holds Discussion with ICRC Director General and German Red Cross Secretary General


The President and executive management team of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) held discussions at the Society’s headquarters with the Director General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr. Pierre Krähenbühl, and the Secretary General of the German Red Cross, Mr. Christian Reuter.

The discussions focused on the current humanitarian situation in Ethiopia, as well as the humanitarian and development activities being implemented by the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, the ICRC, and the German Red Cross in various parts of the country.

ERCS’s President, Ato Abera Tola, stated that over the past five years the Society has been undergoing a comprehensive transformation process aimed at strengthening its capacity and effectiveness in humanitarian service delivery. He highlighted four key areas of focus: emergency response, localization, self-reliance, and volunteer empowerment.

For his part, Mr. Pierre Krähenbühl noted that the strategic partnership between the Ethiopian Red Cross Society and the ICRC spans 90 years, enabling the two organizations to work closely together in addressing humanitarian needs. He expressed his appreciation for ERCS’s strong spirit of cooperation and the commitment demonstrated by its leadership.

Mr. Christian Reuter recalled the fruitful discussions he held with ERCS leadership in Berlin last year and expressed his admiration for the humanitarian work carried out by the Ethiopian Red Cross Society. He emphasized that cooperation between the two National Societies will continue to be of great importance.

During the meeting, ERCS Secretary General, Ato Abera Lulessa, along with other members of the executive management team, briefed the guests on the current humanitarian situation in the country and the ongoing humanitarian and development interventions of the Society.
