ERCS Recognized for its Contribution to Controlling the Marburg Virus Outbreak


The Ethiopian Red Cross Society(ERCS) was presented with a certificate of recognition for its contribution to controlling the Marburg virus outbreak at a ceremony held by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, the Ministry of Health and partners at the Skylight Hotel, in Addis Ababa.

The Society was recognized for its contribution to the joint efforts to control the Marburg virus outbreak through outbreak response, coordination, surveillance, WASH, and logistics support.

In his opening remarks, the State Minister of Health, Dr. Dereje Duguma, said that the short-term control of the Marburg virus outbreak and the prevention of potential harm to citizens and the country were possible due to the contributions of stakeholders in coordination and cooperation.

Dr. Mesay Hailu, Director General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute(EPHI), said that the country has devoloped the capacity to control public health emergencies and that a health system that is responsive, coordinated, and responsive at all levels has been built.

It is worth noting that the Ethiopian Red Cross Society played a critical role in controlling Ethiopia’s first-ever Marburg virus disease outbreak by providing medical supplies worth over 6.4 million Birr, including protective equipment, patient beds, and sanitation materials, in the Southern Ethiopia region.
