ERCS Inaugurates Solar Water Infrastructures built in East Bale Zone at a Cost of over 24 Million birr


The Ethiopian Red Cross Society(ERCS), in collaboration with the German Red Cross and with financial support from the German Humanitarian Assistance, inaugurated the solar water infrastructures built in the Sewena and Legehida woredas of East Bale Zone of the Oromia Regional State in the presence of regional and zonal government officials.

It was announced that the two solar water infrastructures built in the Sewena and Legehida woredas of East Bale Zone the will benefit approximately 13,000 residents of the two woredas who were vulnerable to the shortage of clean drinking water.

In his speech, the Chief Administrator of East Bale Zone, Honorable Ato Jarso Boru, recalled that the Ethiopian Red Cross has rehabilitated 19 water points, has provided Multi-Purpose Cash assistance, animal fodder and hygiene promotion to those in need.

He also said that ERCS has been engaged in sustainable development activities, building solar-powered water infrastructure in areas with severe water shortages, and repairing water points that were out of service for various reasons and using them for the benefit of the community, thereby alleviating their suffering and hardship.

The project is not only about building infrastructures but it is about dignity, opportunity and hope to the community it serves, said Mr.Rodrigo Serqueira , the delegate of the German Red Cross in Ethiopia; the aim of this water infrastructure, which was built with the financial support of the German Federal Government, was to provide sustainable clean drinking water to the local community that was suffering from water shortages; he expressed his gratitude to ERCS’s management and employees; the East Bale Zone Administration and the local community who contributed greatly to the success of the project.

In his speech, the Director of the ERCS’s Disaster Preparedness and Response Department, Ato Mohamed Dada, said that water has a great meaning for the residents of the lowland and desert areas, and urged the community to take responsibility for properly managing and maintaining its water infrastructure and to work in coordination with the relevant stakeholders to focus on sustainable solutions. He called on the local community to become members of the society and support its humanitarian and development objectives of the.

The head of the society’s Oromia regional branch office, Ato Kemal Abdela, on his part recalled that the inaugurated solar water infrastructure has answered a long-standing economic and social question of the local community, and thanked the government officials of the East Bale Zone for closely monitoring the implementation process of the project and providing the necessary support.

It was also noted that the ERCS and the German Red Cross have rehabilitated 19 water points, provided Multi-Purpose Cash assistance to 12,500 households, Animal fodder to 1500 households, Animal vaccination 6500house holds and Hygiene promotion to 37608 households in East Bale zone.
