22 Million Birr Solarization Project Officially Commences in Harshin Woreda, Somali Region

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) Somali Regional Branch has officially launched the Harshin Town Borehole Solarization Project through a formal site handover ceremony held in Harshin Woreda.
The project, funded by the Netherlands Red Cross through MOFA, was launched in the presence of representatives from the Somali Regional Water Bureau, ERCS Somali Regional Branch, Harshin Woreda Administration, community representatives, and the contractor.

During the ceremony, ERCS Somali Regional Branch Head, Ato Hassen Aden, appreciated the patience and cooperation of the Harshin community and local administration while awaiting the start of the project. He reaffirmed ERCS’s commitment to improving access to safe and sustainable water services for vulnerable communities.

Representatives from the Harshin Woreda Administration highlighted the long-standing collaboration between ERCS and the woreda in responding to humanitarian needs. They emphasized that solarizing the Harshin borehole will significantly reduce the high fuel costs currently required to operate the water system—especially during the dry season—thereby allowing resources to be redirected toward other critical development priorities.

The contractor officially took possession of the project site and confirmed its commitment to delivering high-quality work in accordance with the required standards.
This initiative marks an important step toward sustainable and climate-friendly water access solutions for communities in Harshin Woreda.
