June 8, 2026NewsGambelaWFP

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) today held discussions with a delegation led by the Country Director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Ethiopia on strengthening collaboration and expanding humanitarian support to vulnerable communities.

The meeting, held at the ERCS National Headquarters, focused on opportunities for the two organizations to work together in addressing the growing humanitarian needs of refugees who have recently arrived in the Gambella Region following the conflict in South Sudan. Discussions also covered WFP’s support to ERCS, including assistance related to fuel supply and logistics.

ERCS Secretary General, Ato Abera Lulessa, highlighted the Society’s extensive humanitarian operations in Gambella and its strong implementation capacity. He noted that ERCS is well-positioned to partner with WFP in delivering timely and effective humanitarian assistance and expressed appreciation for the organization’s continued support.

WFP Ethiopia Country Director, Zlatan Milišić, emphasized the urgency of ensuring that affected populations receive the assistance they need. He reaffirmed WFP’s commitment to working closely with ERCS to make humanitarian services accessible to communities in need.

As part of the planned joint humanitarian operation, WFP has committed more than USD 4 million in in-kind support. While WFP will provide Food and nutrition assistance, ERCS will be responsible for the last-mile delivery to beneficiaries in Gambella Region, Nuer Zone, Akobo Woreda where arrivals from South Sudan are residing.

The agreement signing is on the verge of completion.
