Gambella Regional Branch of ERCS Holds 17th Ordinary General Assembly


The Gambella Regional Branch of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) successfully convened its 17th Ordinary General Assembly on July 07 30, 2026, in Gambella City. During the assembly, delegates elected a new Board of Directors that will lead the branch for the next four years.
The General Assembly reviewed and approved the branch’s and the board’s four-year performance report and approved the branch’s comprehensive two-year strategic plan, which will guide its humanitarian activities in the coming years.

Addressing the assembly, Mohammed Jamal, ERCS Deputy Secretary General for Branch Affairs and Localization, emphasized the Society’s continued commitment to expanding its humanitarian reach and strengthening service delivery across the country. He noted that, through the support of its more than seven million members, the Society has been able to provide timely humanitarian assistance to communities affected by both natural and human-induced disasters.

Mohammed further highlighted the Society’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the Government of Ethiopia’s vision of enhancing national capacity to respond to humanitarian needs through locally mobilized resources and strengthened community resilience.

Representing the Gambella Regional Government, Engineer Makbedi Uchan commended the Ethiopian Red Cross Society for its unwavering humanitarian service. He acknowledged the Society’s impartial support to communities affected by emergencies and expressed the regional government’s appreciation for the vital assistance the Society has consistently provided during times of natural and human-made crises.
During the plenary discussions, participants openly assessed the branch’s overall performance, identifying key challenges and areas requiring improvement. Delegates emphasized the need to strengthen operational effectiveness and accelerate progress in several priority areas.

The newly elected Board and branch leadership were urged to focus on expanding essential services, including the establishment of a pharmacy service, the expansion of ambulance services, strengthening resource mobilization and membership growth, organizing and reinforcing woreda and zonal branch structures, exploring new investment opportunities, and increasing public awareness of the Red Cross’ humanitarian mandate and services.

At the conclusion of the General Assembly elected Dr. Abel Assefa as Chairperson, Mr. Peter Aman as Vice-Chairperson, and Ms. Genet Elias as Treasurer. Dr. Pal Bot, Mr. Berhanu Dejenen, Mr. Solomon Mamon, and Mr. Ukum Ujuwato were elected as Board Members.
