July 13, 2026NewsAustrianRedCross

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), in collaboration with the Austrian Red Cross and with the support from International Partneship Austria, has inaugurated a 75,000-liter drinking water reservoir and pipeline construction in Gedane Woreda, North Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region, through the MESELAL Top-up Project. Constructed for 4.5 million birr, the project is designed to improve access to safe and reliable drinking water for communities in Muja Town and the surrounding areas.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Ato Getachew Tesfaye, Project Officer at the ERCS North Wollo Branch, said the new reservoir will significantly improve water access for the local community. He noted that the project included the expansion of the water supply system in Emete Mesk (Kebele 09) and Muja Town (Kebele 01), as well as the construction of a 1.5-kilometer water pipeline, all of which have now been completed and officially handed over in the presence of local government representatives.

The Head of the Gedane Woreda Water and Energy Office, Diacon Ashagre Demise, stated that the project addresses one of the community’s most pressing needs by expanding access to clean drinking water. He highlighted that the reservoir’s storage capacity has increased from 30,000 liters to 75,000 liters, significantly improving the reliability of the town’s water supply.

Representing the Gedane Woreda Administration, Ato Semagne Baye, Head of the Woreda Administrative Office, expressed appreciation to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society and the Austrian Red Cross for their continued support. He noted that the new reservoir will play a vital role in addressing the long-standing water challenges faced by residents of Muja Town.
