ERCS Branches Plant Over 270,000 Tree Seedlings Across Southern Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) has planted more than 270,000 tree seedlings across its branches and coordination offices in Southern Ethiopia as part of its environmental conservation campaign under the theme “Plant Hope!”
The tree planting campaign mobilized staff, volunteers, youth groups, and community members in the Wolaita, Gedeo, South Omo, Gofa, Konso, Ari, and Gamo Zones, where 271,321 fruit, shade, and environmentally beneficial tree seedlings were planted in a single day.
The Society also announced that 1.5 million seedlings have been prepared for planting during the current rainy season through the active participation of its members and volunteers.
Speaking on the occasion, Ato Amanuel Ayza, Head of the ERCS Southern Ethiopia Regional Branch, said the annual tree planting initiative complements the Society’s humanitarian and development activities while contributing to environmental protection and climate resilience. He noted that the campaign is being implemented in close collaboration with youth and volunteer organizations across the region.
Ato Amanuel emphasized that ERCS has established a dedicated environmental conservation program aimed at building resilient communities and continues to invest in forest development and ecosystem restoration across different zones.
At the same time, staff and volunteers of the ERCS Central Ethiopia Regional Branch also participated in coordinated tree planting activities held in Butajira Town (East Gurage Zone), Wachemo Preparatory School (Hadiya Zone), Ambericho Achamo Kebele (Hulbarag Woreda, Silte Zone), as well as Gurage and Halaba Zones.
Participants planted a variety of indigenous and locally adapted tree species to strengthen environmental protection, increase green cover, combat climate change, conserve natural resources, and help create a healthier environment for future generations.
