Ethiopian New Year Message 2019
Dear Ethiopian Red Cross Society Family,
As we welcome the Ethiopian New Year 2019, I extend my heartfelt wishes to the people we serve; our members, volunteers, staff, and Board members; our partner National Societies; the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; the International Committee of the Red Cross; our donors; government partners; and all friends of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society.
The year 2018 was a year of remarkable growth, service, and impact for ERCS. Amid conflicts, displacement, drought, floods, disease outbreaks, and other hum anitarian emergencies, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society reached more than three million people across the country. Our teams were present in some of the most difficult and dangerous places—often where needs were greatest, and access was most challenging.
Yet, behind the number “three million” are individual human lives: a mother seeking safety for her children, a displaced family in need of shelter, a community struggling to recover from disaster, an injured person requiring urgent care, and a young person looking for hope amid uncertainty. Reaching them was not merely an institutional achievement; it was humanity expressed through action.
This progress was made possible by the courage of our volunteers and staff, the leadership of our Board, the commitment of our members, and the confidence and generosity of our partners and donors. I offer appreciation to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the British Government for their groundbreaking support, the US government Office of Foreign Assistance, the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, and others. This partnership has enabled ERCS to make a significant leap in its operational capacity—strengthening our ability to reach affected communities more quickly, work more effectively in remote areas, and deliver dignified humanitarian assistance at a greater scale.
To all our partners, including our sister National Societies, the IFRC, and the ICRC, I express our sincere gratitude. Your solidarity has strengthened ERCS and reminded us that the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is at its best when we act together, guided by our Fundamental Principles and united in service to humanity.
As we celebrate, however, we do so with deep reflection and humility. We remember with profound respect our humanitarian heroes who sacrificed their lives, safety, and well-being while serving others. Some never returned to their families. Others continue to carry physical and emotional wounds from their service. We honor them not only in words, but by protecting humanitarian workers, supporting their families, and continuing the mission to which they gave so much.
Their courage reminds us that humanitarian service is not an abstract idea. It is the decision to move toward suffering when others are moving away. It is the willingness to see the humanity of every person—regardless of ethnicity, religion, political opinion, social status, or location. It is the conviction that every life has equal value, and every person deserves dignity, compassion, and protection.
As we enter 2019, Ethiopia and the wider world continue to face serious humanitarian challenges. But we also enter the year with hope—hope rooted in the strength of our volunteers, the trust of communities, the solidarity of our partners, and the enduring power of humanity.
May 2019 become a true Year of Humanity: a year in which compassion is stronger than indifference, dialogue stronger than division, and solidarity stronger than fear. May it be a year in which humanity is not only spoken about but placed at the center of our decisions and demonstrated through our actions.
On behalf of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, I wish you and your families a peaceful, healthy, and fulfilling New Year. May the year ahead renew our shared commitment to protect life, uphold human dignity, and stand with those who need us most.

የ2019 ዓ.ም አዲስ ዓመት መልዕክት
ውድ የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ቤተሰቦች፣
የ2019 ዓ.ም አዲስ ዓመትን በማስመልከት፣ ለምናገለግለው ሕዝባችን፣ ለማኅበራችን አባላት፣ በጎ ፈቃደኞቻችን፣ ሠራተኞቻችንና የቦርድ አባላት፣ ለአጋር ብሔራዊ ማኅበራት፣ ለዓለም አቀፉ ቀይ መስቀል እና ቀይ ጨረቃ ማኅበራት ፌዴሬሽን፣ ለዓለም አቀፉ ቀይ መስቀል ኮሚቴ፣ ለለጋሾቻችን፣ ለአጋር መንግስታዊ ተቋማት እንዲሁም ለሁሉም የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ወዳጆች ከልብ የመነጨ የአዲስ ዓመት ምኞቴን አቀርባለሁ።
2018 ዓ.ም የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር አስደናቂ ዕድገት፣ አገልግሎት እና ውጤት ያስመዘገበበት ዓመት ነበር። በግጭት፣ በመፈናቀል፣ በድርቅ፣ በጎርፍ፣ በበሽታ ወረርሽኞችና በሌሎች የሰብዓዊ አደጋዎች መካከል፣ የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር በመላ ሀገሪቱ ከሦስት ሚሊዮን በላይ ሰዎች ደርሶ አገልግሎት ሰጥቷል። ምላሽ ሰጪ ቡድኖቻችን ፍላጎቱ ከፍተኛ በሆነባቸውና መድረስ እጅግ አስቸጋሪ በሆነባቸው፣ አንዳንዴም እጅግ አደገኛ በሆኑ ስፍራዎች ሳይቀር ተገኝተው ሰብዓዊ አገልግሎታችንን ተደራሽ አድርገዋል፡፡
ነገር ግን፣ “ሦስት ሚሊዮን” ከሚለው ቁጥር ጀርባ የእያንዳንዱ ሰው ሕይወት አለ፤ ልጆቿን ከአደጋ ለመጠበቅ ደህንነት የምትፈልግ እናት፣ መጠለያ የሚያስፈልገው ተፈናቃይ ቤተሰብ፣ ከአደጋ በኋላ ለመልሶ ማገገም የሚታገል ማኅበረሰብ፣ አስቸኳይ ሕክምና የሚፈልግ የተጎዳ ወገን እና እርግጠኝነት በጎደለው ህይወት መካከል ተስፋን የሚሻ ወጣት። ለእነዚህ ሰዎች ሁሉ መድረሳችን የተቋማዊ ስኬት ብቻ አልነበረም፤ ሰብዓዊነት በተግባር የተገለጠበት እውነተኛ ምስክርነት ነበር።
ይህ ተግባራዊ ስኬት ዕውን የሆነው በበጎ ፈቃደኞቻችንና ሠራተኞቻችን ብርታት፣ በቦርዳችን አመራር፣ በአባላቶቻችን ቁርጠኝነት እንዲሁም በአጋሮቻችንና ለጋሾቻችን እምነትና ልግስና ነው። በዚህ አጋጣሚ ወሳኝ ድጋፍ ላደረጉልን ለእንግሊዝ መንግስት እና ለውጭ፣ የጋራ ብልጽግናና ልማት ቢሮው፣ ለአሜሪካ መንግስት የውጪ ሰብዓዊ ዕርዳታ ቢሮ፣ ለአውሮፓ የሲቪል ጥበቃና የሰብዓዊ ዕርዳታ ተግባራት እንዲሁም ለሌሎች አጋሮቻችን ምስጋናዬን አቀርባለሁ። እነዚህ ትብብሮች የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበርን የማድረግ አቅም በከፍተኛ ደረጃ እንዲያድግ አስችለዋል፤ በዚህም ለችግር ለተጋለጡ የማኅበረሰብ ክፍሎች በፍጥነት ለመድረስ፣ ለመድረስ አስቸጋሪ በሆኑ አካባቢዎች ውጤታማ ሥራዎችን ለመስራት እና በተሻለ ደረጃ የሰዎችን ክብር የጠበቀ ሰብዓዊ ድጋፍ ለማቅረብ ያለንን አቅም አጠናክረዋል።
እህት ብሔራዊ ማኅበራት፣ አለም አቀፉ ቀይ መስቀል እና ቀይ ጨረቃ ፌዴሬሽን እና አለም አቀፉ ቀይ መስቀል ኮሚቴን ጨምሮ ለሁሉም አጋሮቻችን ከልብ የመነጨ ምስጋናችንን እናቀርባለን፡፡ አጋርነታችሁ የኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበርን አቅም አጠናክሯል፤ እንዲሁም የአለም አቀፍ ቀይ መስቀል እና ቀይ ጨረቃ ንቅናቄ በመሠረታዊ መርሆቻችን በመመራት እና ለሰብዓዊነት በጋራ በመቆም በአንድነት ስንሠራ ከፍተኛ ብቃቱን እንደሚያሳይ እንድንገነዘብ አድርጎናል።
ሆኖም ይህንን ስኬት ስናከብር፣ በጥልቅ ስሜት ውስጥ በመሆን ነው። የሌሎችን ሕይወት ለመታደግ የራሳቸውን ሕይወት፣ ደህንነት እና ጤንነት የሰዉትን የሰብዓዊ አገልግሎት ጀግኖቻችንን በከፍተኛ አክብሮት እናስባለን። አንዳንዶቹ ለዚህ የተቀደስ ዓላማ በወጡበት ወደ ቤተሰቦቻቸው ሳይመለሱ ቀርተዋል፡፡ ሌሎች ደግሞ በአገልግሎታቸው መካከል ያጋጠሟቸውን አካላዊና ስሜታዊ ቁስሎች ዛሬም ተሸክመው ይገኛሉ። እነዚህን ጀግኖቻችንን በቃላት ብቻ ሳይሆን፣ የሰብዓዊ ሠራተኞቻችንን ደህንነት በመጠበቅ፣ ቤተሰቦቻቸውን በመደገፍ እና እነርሱ ለዚያ የሰጡትን ታላቅ መስዋዕትነት በሚመጥን መልኩ ተልዕኳችንን በመቀጠል እናከብራቸዋለን።
የእነርሱ ጀግንነት የሰብዓዊ አገልግሎት ረቂቅ ሐሳብ ብቻ እንዳልሆነ ያስታውሰናል። ሌሎች ከመከራ እየሸሹ ባሉበት ጊዜ ወደ መከራው ለመግባት የሚወሰን ውሳኔ ነው። የእያንዳንዱን ሰው ሰብዓዊነት ፥ ብሔሩ፣ ሃይማኖቱ፣ የፖለቲካ አመለካከቱ፣ ማኅበራዊ ደረጃው ወይም የሚገኝበት ቦታ ሳይለየው ፥ ለመመልከት ወይም ለመቀበል የሚያስችል ፈቃደኝነት ነው። እያንዳንዱ ሕይወት እኩል ዋጋ እንዳለው፣ እያንዳንዱም ሰው ክብር፣ ርኅራኄና ጥበቃ እንደሚገባው የማያወላውል እምነት መገለጫ ነው።
ወደ 2019 አዲስ ዓመት ስንሸጋገር፣ ኢትዮጵያም ሆነች መላው ዓለም ከባድ የሰብዓዊ ተግዳሮቶችን መጋፈጣቸውን ቀጥለዋል። ሆኖም ወደዚህ ዓመት የምንገባው በተስፋም ጭምር ነው፤ ይህ ተስፋ በበጎ ፈቃደኞቻችን ጥንካሬ፣ በማኅበረሰባችን መተማመን፣ በአጋሮቻችን አብሮነትና ድጋፍ እና በማይናወጠው የሰብዓዊነት ኃይል ላይ የተመሠረተ ነው።
2019 ዓ.ም እውነተኛ የሰብዓዊነት ዓመት ይሁንልን፤ ርኅራኄ ከግዴለሽነት የሚበልጥበት፣ ውይይት ከመከፋፈል የሚጠነክርበት፣ መቀራረብ ከመፈራራት የሚበልጥበት ዓመት ይሁንልን። ሰብዓዊነትን የምንናወራው ብቻ ሳይሆን፣ በውሳኔዎቻችን ማዕከል የምናስቀምጠውና በተግባራችን የምናሳየው ዓመት ይሁንልን።
በኢትዮጵያ ቀይ መስቀል ማኅበር ስም፣ ለእርስዎና ለቤተሰብዎ ሰላማዊ፣ ጤናማና የተሟላ አዲስ ዓመት እመኛለሁ። መጪው ዓመት ሕይወትን ለመታደግ፣ የሰውን ልጅ ክብር ለማስጠበቅ እና የእኛን ድጋፍ በእጅጉ ለሚፈልጉ ወገኖች ከጎናቸው ለመቆም ያለንን የጋራ ቁርጠኝነት የምናድስበት ይሁን።
