ERCS Dire Dawa Branch Provides Aid Worth Over 1.4 Million Birr to Vulnerable Residents
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) Dire Dawa Branch provided food and educational materials worth more than 1.4 million Birr to vulnerable residents of Lagoda Mirga and Lagadini Kebeles in Dire Dawa City Administration, where communities are facing food insecurity due to inadequate rainfall.
The assistance benefited 482 households across the two ebeles, with food grains and cooking oil distributed to affected families. In addition, 150 students from beneficiary households received educational materials.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Dire Dawa City Administration Mayor Kadir Juhar commended the humanitarian support provided by ERCS and called for continued efforts to strengthen assistance to vulnerable community members. He also urged the public further to strengthen the culture of mutual support and cooperation as the city administration works to mitigate the impact of the rainfall shortage.
Mr. Abdusalam Ahmed, Board Chairperson of the ERCS Dire Dawa Branch, noted that the city administration has been a key supporter of the branch’s humanitarian activities, providing an annual financial grant of 10 million Birr. He expressed his appreciation to the Mayor and the administration, noting that the assistance was funded through this grant.
Ms. Hayat Ahmed, a branch board member, explained that beneficiary data was obtained from the Disaster Risk Management Authority, with priority given to persons with disabilities, pregnant and lactating women, and students from low-income families.
Ms. Bahar Adem, Head of ERCS Dire Dawa Branch Office, said the Society is using resources mobilized from the public to support people in need and called on the Dire Dawa community to contribute to humanitarian action by becoming ERCS members.
