ERCS helping in need
Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) with support from International Organization for Migration (IOM) delivered non-food items and cash assistance to 6,577 internally displaced households by severe flooding and conflict, in Afar and Oromia Regional States, in February, 2019.
The distribution, in close coordination with the local authorities and other stakeholders, includes blankets, jerrycans, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, and plastic sheets for shelters, kettles, laundry soaps, hessian bags and other utensils. The Society spent near to birr 10.7 million for non-food items support to 5,147 displaced households.
ERCS also provided cash assistance to 1,430 internally displaced households from that of the total amount. The cash assistance, which totally worth near to birr 4.3 million, is offering much-needed support to vulnerable families. It aims to promote greater self-reliance and provide choice while allowing internally displaced people to meet their household’s basic needs.
ERCS previously distributed 4.5 million birr cash assistance to 1,517 internally displaced households in Moyale Woredas of Oromia and Somali Regional States. In the first half of 2018/19 fiscal year, the Society delivered its emergency response to 240 thousand conflict induced victims and 170 thousand drought affected people in the country.
