The Ethiopian Red Cross Society is evacuating residents at risk of flooding in the Afar region

Semera August 2, 2014፡ The Ethiopian Red Cross (ERCS) is evacuating people from the Dubti district in the Afar region to designated areas.
ERCS has developed a system to predict flood risk where precautions are already being taken to help mitigate the risk. A call has been made for the residents of areas that are at risk of flooding this summer to take the necessary precautions.
Consequently, 2 thousand households in Hanakis and Arado kebeles, where flooding is possible, have been relocated to flood-free areas. Necessary support is being given to the displaced from their homes to cover their daily expenses.
Similarly, in the Afar region of Dubti district, Gurmudali Kabul was packed with sand in bags and early flood prevention work was also carried out. This work will save 250 hectares of agricultural land from flooding. Besides prevent the danger that may befall the local community.
Approximately 2 thousand bags of sand were filled to avoid flooding for three consecutive days.
