Message From Secretary General Of The ERCS
July 31, 2014
On behalf of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society and on my own behalf, I would like to congratulate and extend best wishes to you all to the 66th anniversary of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebrated on May 8, 2014 under the theme of My Red Cross Story.
The theme of this years anniversary indicates that almost everyone has a Red Cross or Red Crescent Story which reminds us the humanitarian activities undertaken in the past. It also inspires us to better plan humanitarian activities in the future.
On this historical day, it is imperative to remind contributions of the 17 million Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers in the world including Ethiopia to reduce human suffering caused by natural and manmade disasters.
Guided by the Geneva Conventions and the principles of Red Cross, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society undertook several activities to protect and reduce human suffering and to ensure peace and stability. It is also working aggressively to reach out the most vulnerable effectively and efficiently in a sustainable manner.
In addition to protecting and reducing human suffering, the Society has accomplished several projects in various fields which include among others health and care, water &sanitation, First Aid, restoration of family link, disaster response, prevention of HIV/AIDS, disaster preparedness through climate adaption and community focused development activities.
Dear Red Cross and Red Crescent Families The Society has started implementing a change plan for the last two years to improve its humanitarian working systems. Its change initiative has shown encouraging results. I would like to recognize the vanguard role the public has played in the Societys 78 years of humanitarian service to reach out victims of various disasters by using its money, labor and knowledge.
The Society needs to focus on undertaking sustainable community based development activities by strengthening its capacity which demands the strong support of the public. To this effect, the society has launched a revenue generation campaign under the theme of One Birr for Humanity.
Hence, I would like to take this opportunity to urge the public at large to actively take part in this campaign.
Once again, I wish you all Red Cross Red Crescent families to have a happy Red Cross Red Crescent Day.
United we can change
