A 43.43 Million Birr Community Drought Response and Recovery Initiative is Being Carried out in the Somali Region.
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society and the Netherlands Red Cross are working together on community drought response through a combined fund of more than 43,431,000 ETB donated by the British Red Cross. This is done in order to directly support multi-purpose Cash for Catastrophe Relief efforts totaling 23,400,300 Birr for the benefit of the Somali community in 11 kebeles three Woredas of the Shebele zone, as well as other recovery initiatives through an entire budget of 20,030,810 ETB.
While he is attending cash distribution in Bereket Kebele, Godie District of Shabelle zone, Alebachew Getie, the coordinator of the #Ethiopian Red Cross Society’s Netherland red cross project, pointed out that the organization has been leading the way in supporting its citizens affected by natural and man-made disasters, collaborating with its national partner societies to provide the necessary support regardless of distance or circumstances.
According to Alebachew the British Red Cross is back donor for this project through the Netherlands Red Cross, and Ethiopian red cross societies are implementing the project. Recently, 11 kebelles of Godie, Kallafo and Adadile district beneficiaries have received third-round cash support, and each of the 1,013 households has received multi-purpose cash of 23,100 ETB in total.
Beside this, the project is working on supporting non-food items, maintaining and restoring water schemes, raising community awareness of sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition, distributing improved vegetable seeds adapted to climate change to selected agro-pastoralists, restocking goats for drought-affected community members, and building water spreader weirs for environmental restoration (soil and water conservation) in the Fafan Zone of the Somali Region.
